Community Shield 2015 pits Arsenal against Chelsea on Sunday

This year’s traditional new season opener, the FA Community Shield, takes place this Sunday at 4 pm local time and can be watched live at venues with BT Sport coverage. This 93 year old contest between the winners of the FA Cup and the Premier League is still referred to by many as the Charity Shield. This is because the proceeds from the match are shared between the 124 clubs who competed in the FA Cup First Round for onward transmission to charities and projects of their choice.

This year’s contestants are Arsenal, who won the FA Cup, and Chelsea, who won the Premier League. Pre-match, the bookies are offering odds of: Arsenal 2/1; Chelsea 7/5; Draw 12/5, which suggests that they favour Chelsea despite their poor pre-season friendly results. They have yet to win a match in 90 minutes, while Arsenal have won all four of their games scoring 14 goals and conceding only one. This was in a 3-1 victory over Everton in Singapore last week, where they also beat Lyon 6-0!

Arsenal are the current holders of the Shield and have won it 13 times, whereas Chelsea have won it only four times, but at the back of the bookie’s minds is another statistic – Arsene Wenger’s teams have never beaten Jose Mourinho’s in thirteen attempts…

This match will be of particular interest because of one man, Peter Cech, who left Chelsea to join Arsenal this summer. He was at Chelsea for 11 years before being replaced by Thibaut Courtois, ten years his junior. Many still question Jose Mourinho’s decision following Cech’s excellent 2013/2014 campaign, where he kept 16 clean sheets and conceded a goal every 128 minutes. Startling figures, especially when compared to Courtois’ 12 clean sheets and goal every 94 minutes.

Has Arsene Wenger finally found a goalkeeper good enough to support his quest for a Premier League title? Will Mourinho come to regret the choice he made when he promoted the young Courtois to the first team at the expense of the experienced Peter Cech?

Sunday’s showdown could well answer a few questions…
