Ibiza Preservation Fund
Type of Organisation: Environmental Organisation
Website: www.ibizapreservationfund.org Also on Facebook
Aims/Focus: The Ibiza Preservation Fund aims to help preserve Ibiza and Formentera’s exceptional beauty and natural value and promote sustainable initiatives.
Information: The Ibiza Preservation Fund (IPF) was set up in 2008 in response to unsustainable growth patterns on the island. Concerned about Ibiza’s future, friends Serena Cook and William Aitken, with the help of Ben Goldsmith, established the fund to raise money to support environmental initiatives that protect our land and sea.
The IPF has now funded over 30 projects covering marine conservation, land protection, wildlife preservation, organic farming, waste management and renewable energy. It also helped set up and fund Alianza Mar Blava, which has successfully campaigned against offshore oil prospecting in the Mediterranean Sea.
In response to critical water shortages and contamination issues, the IPF supported the creation of a water alliance. Alianza por el Agua is now working with key stakeholders to implement solutions to the islands’ water challenges.
Other current projects include work to protect marine Posidonia meadows from boat anchoring and pollution as well as efforts to recover populations of endangered seahorses. The projects are being carried out with local partners GEN-GOB and Vellmari Diving Centre.
So we can continue to enjoy a landscape full of trees and blossoms, the IPF also supports local almond growers. An almond-cracking machine was purchased to help make crops profitable for farmers and the consumption of locally grown almonds is being promoted.
