Vino y Co is a wine shop dedicated to sharing the full extent of Spain’s fantastic wine culture. Plus highlights from Italy, France, Austria, Portugal and more. While supermarkets and most wine shops focus on familiar names and big price tags the Vino y Co ethos is to search out good-value wine from small producers. The result? A wine shopping experience that delights the taste buds without denting the wallet.
Founded by Jeroen Hamersma, Vino y Co is very much a family business. The Dutch family has lived in Ibiza for over 15 years. Jeroen, whose interest in wine was piqued while drinking with this brother Harold, one of the Netherlands’ top wine critics, began importing wine for his own enjoyment. Friends began asking for bottles, then cases. Recognising the demand, and wanting to protect his own wine supply, Jeroen opened the shop in 2009. Daughter Rosa is now partner in the business, and her older sister Bette often comes back from Holland to help out in the summer.
More than “just” a wine shop, Vino y Co has developed a speciality in high-end sake, with brands that Jeroen and Rosa personally selected on a tasting trip to Japan. It also sells artisan beer and select port, mescal, rum and more. The only real criteria for what goes on the shelves at Vino y Co is quality and value. If it is a fantastic product and doesn’t cost the moon, they want to sell it. There are of course some higher-priced items for those who enjoy the prestige of flashing some cash, but Jeroen and Rosa discourage that approach to drinking. Booze should be a pleasure, they believe, a treat to bring friends and family together, not an excuse for ego.
With this in mind, they happily spend much of their time in the shop educating customers (who rapidly become friends) on their latest wonderful finds. They have a wide range of wines and cavas available by the glass and will tell anyone who asks all about the wine. Between them, they speak about half-a-dozen languages, so guests can learn about wine in their own words.
Small wonder Vino y Co is a social hub for many islanders. During the quiet season, usually from October to April or May, it runs a wine and tapas night every Friday. The Hamersma family are superb cooks, in addition to their other gifts, and everyone pitches in to craft home-made pâtés, rich stews, and whatever else grabs their fancy. Other tempting nibbles may include cheese plates or fresh oysters. Tapas night is free to attend and usually starts around 8PM. Its wise to arrive early as the shop often gets filled to capacity.
Vino y Co also hosts an annual wine festival at Sluiz in Santa Gertrudis. This year it takes place on Saturday, 22 April. It features stands from 35 of the bodegas the shop represents and there will be over 100 wines to taste, all for a 10 Euro entrance fee. Needless to say, this is an occasion to book a taxi.
Whether you’re a dedicated oenophile or casual sipper, Vino y Co is a great place to discover delicious, inexpensive wine you won’t find anywhere else. And to meet a family whose energy and enthusiasm for their work exemplifies the Ibiza spirit.
