Ibiza is blessed with every shade of esoteric philosophies. Many of these healing practices offer a decided alternative to standard Western medicine. Whether or not this is a good thing is very much in the eye of the beholder but, in the spirit of open-minded inquiry, we enjoy exploring the array of healing options available on the island. Here is a closer look at one popular practice: crystal healing.
It is well-documented that people have long had a fascination with precious and semi-precious stones. After all, they are items of great beauty and durability. Advocates of crystal healing trace the practice back to ancient Mesopotamia, where they believe Sumerians used crystals some 6,000 years ago. Ancient Egyptians prized stones like lapis lazuli, emerald and turquoise. Later, the Greeks used different stones such as amethyst and hematite, supposedly for their protective properties.
How it works*
The modern practice of crystal healing draws from a blend of cultural beliefs about the body. First, it embraces the Chinese belief that health is governed by life-energy called chi (or qi). Illness is thought to be caused by lack of chi, or disturbances in the body’s energy field. Crystal healers also borrow the Hindu and Buddhist concept of chakras. These are supposed to be points in the body that are portals for life-energy, and which connect the body’s physical and spiritual sides.
*There is no scientific evidence for these suppositions, but who’s to say they’re wrong?
What to expect
If you visit a crystal healer, you will experience a calm, meditative treatment. Healers use specific crystals and place them at strategic places on the body — such chakras or other important energetic points — and you rest while the stones work on your energy conduits. The idea is that every type of crystal has unique properties that work on specific physical, emotional, or spiritual complaints. During treatment, they channel positive energy into the body and help remove negative energy.
Know your crystals
Crystal healers use a wide range of rocks and crystals. Here are a few of the most popular ones, according to crystal site EnergyMuse:
Amethyst: This stone works to “give into innate desires like sound sleep and relaxation, but it will also work with your third eye to balance the mind”.
Agate: “the properties of agate make it easier to focus on what is good in your life, so that you can heal from mistakes and bring the harmony it instils in your spirit to everything you do”.
Aquamarine: “protects the psyche from taking on dark vibrations and negative behavioural patterns”.
Clear quartz: “A universal healer, it links to all chakras to provide balance and harmony”.
Rhondite: will help you “discover new passions, attract a more fulfilling kind of love and boost humanitarian efforts”.
Shungite: “is now the go-to stone for… purification and detoxification of the body, as well as providing general healing for the emotional well being”.
