You would be amazed how many people have eaten this most famous of Spanish dishes, yet do not know where the name originated.

And this being a Saturday night, it seems the perfect time to fill them in…

The name is an abbreviation of the phrase ‘para ella’ meaning ‘for her’ and refers to the Sunday tradition whereby the men of the family would cook for the lady of the house, out of gratitude for the rest of their meals throughout the week.

It sort of throws the English tradition of a beer down at the pub while the good lady prepares the Sunday lunch into stark relief?
