Personal training during and after pregnancy isn’t just for camera-conscious celebs. Exercise has lots of benefits for expectant and new mothers, as personal trainer Sandra Albuschat knows from experience. Sandra created Mama Fitness Ibiza to empower women navigating the physical and mental changes of pregnancy and post-partum.
With more than 25 years’ experience in fitness and training, and several years of motherhood under her belt, Sandra is a reliable, confident guide for this life transition. Her energy and sunny attitude provide motivation and inspiration, if yours is lacking. She kindly took the time to answer common questions about exercise pre-and-post pregnancy.
WHY IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE A WORKOUT DESIGNED JUST FOR MAMAS?
During pregnancy, the body changes nearly every week. Mama Fitness takes into account the needs of each individual to guide them safely through training. I help women address common problems like sickness, water retention, back pain, stretch marks, and varicose veins.
After pregnancy, it is so important to rebuild the tummy and pelvic floor muscles. Many new mums have problems with bladder control, which they can improve with exercise. They can also learn the techniques to heal separated abdominal muscles. Most mums can start exercising soon after giving birth. Gentle stretching, arm circles and walking activate the metabolism, joints and muscles. I tailor Mama Fitness to each person, giving them the best exercises for their needs and level of fitness.
WILL MAMA FIT HELP ME LOSE WEIGHT?
Yes, of course! Mama Fitness helps you reshape your body and lose weight. We start with the tummy and pelvic floor. Next are exercises to strengthen and reshape the muscles. Then we start with a moderate fat-burning training. Exercise is key, because when you shouldn’t reduce your calorie intake while breastfeeding.
HOW CAN EXERCISE HELP IF I HAD A DIFFICULT PREGNANCY OR DELIVERY?
It depends on the individual, of course, but it definitely helps with weight-loss, recovering fitness after bed rest, water retention and bladder control issues.
I NEVER EXERCISE, IS IT SAFE TO START NOW I AM PREGNANT (OR A NEW MUM)?
It is always good for your body to move. Exercise activates your metabolism, immune system and your well being. It strengthens and firms your bones and muscles, and lifts your mood. The key is moderate training focused on your needs, fitness level and stage of pregnancy.
HOW WILL EXERCISE BENEFIT ME AND MY BABY?
The weeks after giving birth can be frustrating. You are sleep-deprived. Everything is about the baby. Your independent life is gone for the foreseeable future. Your body has changed. Mama Fitness gives you “me time”. It helps you get back in shape and boosts your mood.
My training approach springs from my experience of being a single mum in a foreign country, without family support. I understand the pressure and responsibilities new mum’s face. Mama Fitness is designed to fit into daily life, to be positive and empowering. I show new mums how to start the right way and I am available to answer questions via What’s App or telephone. A happy, relaxed mum who feels fit and well has a happy influence on her baby!
