Charity holiday gift guide – presents that give something back

Some holiday gifts last a few months or a few years. Some last a lifetime. As we celebrate this season of giving, we wanted to share some ideas for presents that give something back. These are gifts you can give knowing they will have a positive impact for years to come.

There are several wonderful charities that care for abandoned, mistreated, or neglected animals on Ibiza. Among them are Care4Cats, which relies on donations and volunteers to sterilise and care for feral cats as well as rescuing and finding homes for abandoned pets, and Moji’s Animal Sanctuary, which is run purely on donations and rescues creatures of all species. Ibiza Horse Valley offers a safe, caring environment and rehabilitation for equines, while Can Dog shelters and cares for pups in need. A Christmas gift to any of these organisations is a way to make a big difference right here in Ibiza.

Deforestation has a devastating effect on the environment and communities around the world. Planting a tree, or a few, is a fantastic gift that will literally grow for generations. You can plant trees right here on Ibiza, if you choose. If you want to reach out, the World Land Trust offers tree gift packages so you can donate trees to nature reserves in Kenya, Ecuador, and Brazil. The WLT plants native species then tends and monitors the trees. Over time, they help restore damaged ecosystems and rebuild wildlife habitats.

Western parents take the option of vaccinating their children for granted, but in many parts of the world, families don’t have access to vaccines. UNICEF has a gift catalogue where you can donate vaccinate children against polio, measles and other deadly diseases. You can also help by donating essential equipment like coolers to transport medicines, and kits for medical workers.

Far too many animals are being hunted to extinction, or driven out of their habitat by human actions. The World Wildlife Fund gives you a chance to help save some of the world’s most endangered species, including elephants, tigers, leopards, and gorillas. Gift options include adopting an animal for a few Euros a month, or one-off gifts to support their work including training rangers and tracking wildlife.

If you are looking for a gift that will genuinely change someone’s life, consider sponsoring a child. Save The Children runs a highly respected sponsorship program that connects you to an individual boy or girl. Your monthly donation helps fund healthcare, education and development programmes for the child and his/her community. One of the great things about sponsorship is that you are encouraged to communicate with the child so you see them grow up and witness the positive difference a gift can make.
