This time of year it is tempting to curl up by the radiator with a cup of hot chocolate, and maybe a plate of biscuits. However, staying fit not only keeps those extra holiday pounds from creeping on, it also helps boost your mood and energy, which can suffer in winter. If you want to keep active but can’t face the out of doors, try CrossFit. This total-body training programme is gym-based, meaning you don’t have to get cold and wet to work up a sweat. Here’s what you need to know to get started.
What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a unique fitness programme designed to help you get strong and flexible. Founder Greg Glassman systematically designed CrossFit to address a range of fitness needs. According to the company website, “workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. These are the core movements of life.” The programme focuses on high-intensity activity, meaning short bursts of effort. This is known to help rapidly increase fitness levels, plus it means you don’t have to spend all day at the gym to see results!
Who can do it?
Before starting any workout programme you should consult your healthcare professional. Once you have the all-clear, you can definitely do CrossFit. It is designed to be adaptable to all ages, body types and athletic abilities. Exercises and intensities are scaled depending on where you’re at, allowing you to jump in and quickly start improving.
What should I wear?
All you need to get started is good basic athletic wear. A fitted, sweat-wicking top, sport shorts, and cushioned training shoes are essential. Women will want to wear a sport-bra suitable for high-impact movement. You may want to add a sweat band or two as well, to mop up all that hard work.
