Remember those days when working out were associated with push-ups in the living room, jogging on the beach or hopping on the stair master at your local gym? Not anymore! Pilates uses correct alignment, control, breathing and flowing movements (the Pilates principles) to get a perfect working body from the inside out.
What is Pilates?
The man behind Pilates is Joseph Pilates, who developed, during the First World War, this practice to aid injured soldiers in regaining their health by strengthening, stretching and stabilising key muscles. In Pilates targeted exercises are designed to lengthen muscles, tone the physique and stretch every inch of your body.
Who can do it?
Pilates can be practised by people of all ages, from children to seniors, including athletes and fitness enthusiasts, as well as persons with specific medical conditions. Pilates helps also women during and after pregnancy by reducing back pain, strengthening the pelvic and helping control the breath.
What should I wear?
Keeping your attire simple, at least at first, will help you figure out what works best for you. Try to avoid baggy and prefer instead form-fitting clothes.
Where do I find it?
Pilates Estudio in Santa Gertrudis is a professional Pilates studio run by Belén Pombo. She started practising Pilates in 2002 after being in a car accident in which she injured her neck, the pelvic and her sacrum. After a year and a half of rehabilitation, the doctors discharged her having lost 70% of her cervical mobility and with chronic pains that prevent her from having a normal life. Eight years later, fully recovered and convinced of the effectiveness of Pilates she opened her own studio in Ibiza.
